Dr. Jim Luken: The Venus Flytrap
posted 03/22/2017 by HCM
When: 04/22/2017

~~The Horry County Museum and the AVX Foundation present a lecture by Dr. Jim Luken on Saturday, April 22nd, on the Venus flytrap.
The Venus flytrap is known worldwide as a carnivorous plant catching prey with unique snap traps. However, few people know that the Venus flytrap is native to Horry County and that one of the last remaining refuges of the plant occurs here also. This talk will cover some fascinating aspects of the species as well as current efforts to conserve remaining populations.
Dr. Jim Luken is Associate Provost of Graduate Studies and Professor of Biology at Coastal Carolina University. He has studied local populations of the Venus flytrap during the last 15 years and is broadly involved in efforts to rescue and preserve rare endemic plant species in Horry County and beyond.
The program will begin at 1 pm in the McCown Auditorium located at 805 Main Street, Conway SC. This event is free and open to the public. For more information, call 843-915-5320 or email hcgmuseum@horrycounty.org. To view a full list of programs, visit our website at www.horrycountymuseum.org.
